How to perform

Close-Grip Push-Up movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Hold a high plank with the hands a little narrower than shoulder width, fingers forward and the body straight from head to heels.

  1. 1

Brace the trunk and squeeze the glutes.

  2. 2

Bend the elbows straight back along the ribs to lower the chest.

  3. 3

    Stop just above the floor.

  4. 4

Press back up to straight arms and pause.

Breathing: Inhale as you lower, exhale as you press.

Coaching tips

  • Elbows back, not out

  • Body moves as one piece

  • Full lockout

Common mistakes

  • Flaring the elbows into a regular push-up

  • Hips sagging or piking

  • Cutting the depth short

Safety notes

  • Keep the hands at least a fist apart if a narrower grip bothers the wrists or elbows.
