Smith Machine Incline Shoulder Raise movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Set an incline bench under a Smith machine so the bar lines up over your shoulders, then unrack it with a shoulder-width overhand grip and nearly straight arms.

  1. 1

Lock the elbows and keep them locked.

  2. 2

Push the bar up by spreading your shoulder blades and lifting the shoulders off the bench.

  3. 3

Pause for a second at the top.

  4. 4

Let the shoulders sink back to the bench under control.

Breathing: Exhale as you push up, inhale as you lower.

Coaching tips

  • Reach, don't press

  • Elbows stay locked

  • Head stays on the pad

Common mistakes

  • Bending the elbows and turning it into a press

  • Setting the bench so the bar is over the face or chest

  • Rushing through the short range

Safety notes

  • Set the safety stops just below your lockout height before you start.
