Balance Board Stand

Standing with both feet on a wobble or rocker balance board and keeping it level. Trains ankle stiffness, reactive balance and the small corrections that single-leg drills on flat ground can't challenge.

How to perform

Balance Board Stand movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Standing next to a wall or rail with a balance board in front of you, then stepping on with feet hip-width apart over its centre.

  1. 1

Hold the support and step onto the board one foot at a time, feet evenly spaced either side of the centre.

  2. 2

Soften the knees, brace lightly and bring the board level.

  3. 3

Let go of the support and keep the edges off the floor with small ankle corrections.

  4. 4

Hold for the prescribed time; progress to slow side-to-side tilts or a single-leg stance once steady.

Breathing: Breathe slowly and steadily; holding your breath makes you stiffer and wobblier.

Coaching tips

  • Soft knees

  • Correct from the ankles, not the arms

  • Eyes on a fixed point ahead

Common mistakes

  • Locking the knees

  • Leaning the hips to save balance

  • Staring down at the board

  • Gripping the support the whole time

Safety notes

  • Stand within reach of a wall or rail, on a non-slip surface, and step off rather than riding a fall.
