Barbell Wrist Rotation movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Stand tall holding a light straight bar with an overhand, shoulder-width grip, elbows at your sides and forearms level in front of you.

  1. 1

Keep the elbows and forearms still.

  2. 2

Extend one wrist while flexing the other, as if rolling up a newspaper.

  3. 3

Alternate hands back and forth, rolling the bar steadily.

  4. 4

After a set, reverse the direction by leading with wrist flexion.

Breathing: Breathe steadily throughout; avoid holding your breath.

Coaching tips

  • Only the wrists move

  • Big, smooth wrist turns

  • Forearms stay level

Common mistakes

  • Moving the elbows or shoulders

  • Rushing short, choppy turns

  • Using a bar so heavy the forearms sag

Safety notes

  • Start with an empty or light bar; stop if you feel sharp wrist pain.
