How to perform

Below-Knee Hang Snatch movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Stand with a wide snatch hook grip and feet under the hips, then hinge until the bar sits just below the knees with the shoulders over it and the back flat.

  1. 1

Pause briefly below the knee, arms long and weight over the mid-foot.

  2. 2

Push the floor away and move the bar up past the knees without letting the shoulders rise early.

  3. 3

Once the bar reaches the hips, extend explosively and shrug, letting the elbows bend high and out.

  4. 4

Pull yourself under and punch the bar overhead, receiving it with locked arms in a deep squat.

  5. 5

Stand up with the bar overhead, then lower it back to the hang.

Breathing: Inhale and brace before lowering into the hang, hold it through the receive, and exhale after standing.

Coaching tips

  • Stay over the bar

  • Hips to the bar

  • Punch and sit

Common mistakes

  • Standing up out of the hang before the pull

  • Bar swinging away at the hips

  • Pressing out the lockout

  • Chest dropping in the squat

Safety notes

  • Get coaching before adding load.

  • Only snatch loads you can hold steady in an overhead squat.
