Starting position
Stand facing a racked Smith machine bar or a sturdy ledge, place the hands next to each other on it and walk the feet back until the body is straight and the arms are locked.
Brace so the body stays in one line from head to heels.
Bend the elbows, keeping them close to the sides, and lower the chest to the bar.
Touch the bar lightly.
Press back to straight arms.
Breathing: Inhale as you lower, exhale as you press.
Coaching tips
Elbows skim the ribs
Chest to the bar
Lower the bar to make it harder
Common mistakes
Hips sagging
Elbows flaring out
Short reps that stop before the chest reaches the bar
Safety notes
Lock the Smith bar in place, or use a surface that cannot slide or tip.
