Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Stand facing a sturdy box or bench about knee height, holding dumbbells at your sides.

  1. 1

Place your whole working foot on top of the box.

  2. 2

Lean slightly forward and drive through that foot to stand up on the box.

  3. 3

Bring the trailing foot up to stand tall, or keep it hovering.

  4. 4

Step down under control with the trailing leg first.

  5. 5

Complete all reps on one side, then switch.

Breathing: Exhale as you step up, inhale as you step down.

Coaching tips

  • Control the step down

Common mistakes

  • Pushing off the bottom leg to cheat

  • Working knee caving inward

  • Dropping down uncontrolled

Safety notes

  • Use a stable box that won't slide or tip.

  • Start with a lower box and lighter dumbbells.
