How to perform
Main muscles working (thicker lines)
Starting position
Stand with a light barbell across the upper back, hands in a wide snatch grip and feet in your squat stance.
Dip a few inches by bending the knees, torso upright.
Pop the legs straight to unweight the bar from the back.
Immediately push yourself down under it, punching the arms to lockout as you drop.
Receive the bar overhead in a full squat with the arms locked and the chest up.
Stand up with the bar overhead, then lower it carefully to the back.
Breathing: Inhale and brace before the dip, hold it through the receive, and exhale once standing.
Coaching tips
Pop, then drop
Push yourself under
Lock out as you land
Common mistakes
Pressing the bar up instead of dropping under it
Dipping too deep or tipping forward
Soft elbows in the receive
Heels lifting in the squat
Safety notes
Start with an empty bar and bumper plates so the bar can be dumped forward.
Train it only once the overhead squat is comfortable at that depth.
