Jefferson Curl movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Stand on a sturdy box or step with legs straight, holding a light dumbbell or kettlebell in front of your thighs.

  1. 1

Tuck your chin to your chest.

  2. 2

Slowly roll down one segment of the spine at a time, letting the weight lower towards your toes.

  3. 3

Go only as low as feels controlled, then pause.

  4. 4

Roll back up slowly from the bottom of the spine to the top, lifting the head last.

Breathing: Exhale slowly as you roll down and inhale as you roll up.

Coaching tips

  • Very slow tempo

  • One vertebra at a time

  • Light weight only

Common mistakes

  • Using too much weight

  • Rolling down quickly

  • Bending the knees to go deeper

Safety notes

  • Start with bodyweight or a very light load and increase only gradually.

  • Skip this if loaded spinal flexion causes discomfort.
