How to perform

Safety Bar Squat movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Step under the safety squat bar so the pads sit on your upper back and the handles point forward. Hold the handles, unrack and set feet about shoulder-width apart.

  1. 1

Brace your core and pull down on the handles to keep the bar steady.

  2. 2

Squat down between your heels, fighting the bar's tendency to tip you forward.

  3. 3

Reach your normal squat depth with a neutral spine.

  4. 4

Drive up, pushing your upper back into the pads to stay upright.

Breathing: Inhale and brace before descending, exhale as you finish the ascent.

Coaching tips

  • Push your upper back into the pad

  • Handles down, chest up

  • Drive through mid-foot

Common mistakes

  • Letting the chest collapse forward

  • Pushing the handles forward instead of down

  • Heels lifting

Safety notes

  • Squat in a rack with safeties; the bar is heavier than it looks and can pitch forward.

  • Build up gradually, as loads differ from a straight bar.
