How to perform
Main muscles working (thicker lines)
Starting position
Stand holding the bar at the top of the thighs with a wide snatch hook grip, knees slightly bent and torso inclined just forward.
Brace with the arms long and the bar close to the thighs.
Extend the hips and knees sharply, as at the top of a snatch pull.
At full extension, shrug the shoulders straight up without bending the elbows.
Lower the shoulders and return to the start position for the next rep.
Breathing: Inhale and brace before each rep, and exhale as the shoulders come down.
Coaching tips
Legs, then shrug
Long arms
Bar into the hips
Common mistakes
Bending the elbows
Grip narrower than your snatch grip
Loading so heavy the rep turns slow
Leaning back at the top
Safety notes
Keep the spine neutral in the dip.
Use straps rather than jerking the bar when grip limits the load.
