Split Snatch

A snatch received overhead in a split stance instead of a squat. The traditional style suits lifters with limited overhead squat mobility and trains fast, precise footwork.

How to perform

Split Snatch movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Stand with the bar over the mid-foot and close to the shins, feet under the hips, a wide snatch grip, hips down and chest up.

  1. 1

Push through the floor, holding the back angle until the bar passes the knees.

  2. 2

At the hips, extend explosively and shrug, letting the elbows bend high and out.

  3. 3

Pull under and punch the bar overhead as you drive the feet into a split.

  4. 4

Receive with locked arms, front shin near vertical and back knee soft.

  5. 5

Step the front foot back, then the back foot forward, and lower the bar to the floor.

Breathing: Inhale and brace before the pull, hold it through the receive, and exhale after standing.

Coaching tips

  • Split fast and wide

  • Punch and lock

  • Bar over the middle of the stance

Common mistakes

  • Split too short or on one line

  • Pressing out the lockout

  • Torso tipping forward in the split

  • Recovering back foot first

Safety notes

  • Learn the split footwork with a PVC pipe first.

  • Be ready to drop the bar forward and step back on a miss.
