Ripe muskmelon (kharbuja) blended with chilled milk and a tablespoon of melon seeds (magaz). The melon is over 90% water and gives potassium and vitamin A; the seeds add protein and good fats for very little money. A good afternoon drink in April and May when muskmelons are everywhere and cheap.

Ingredients
Method
- 1
Grind the melon seeds with 50 ml of the milk on high for 20 seconds to a smooth white paste.
- 2
Add the muskmelon, the rest of the milk, cardamom and ice.
- 3
Blend on medium for 20 seconds until smooth; stop as soon as it is uniform so it stays thick rather than frothy. Pour and drink immediately.
Tips
- Smell the stem end of the melon: a sweet, musky scent means it is ripe. A scentless one makes a bland shake.
- If the melon is not sweet, add 1 date rather than sugar.
Swaps
- No magaz? Use 6 cashews: similar protein and fat, adds a nut allergen.
