The sweet version of the Bihari sattu drink: roasted chana flour whisked into cold water with a little jaggery and cardamom. It gives you roughly 3 parts carbohydrate to 1 part protein, which is the usual target for recovery after a hard workout, from two ingredients that cost very little. Drink it within an hour of training or as a mid-morning filler.

Ingredients
Method
- 1
Dissolve the jaggery in 3 tbsp of the water in a glass, pressing it with a spoon until no grains are left.
- 2
Add the sattu and stir to a smooth paste, then pour in the rest of the chilled water while stirring.
- 3
Add the cardamom and a pinch of salt, stir well and drink straight away.
Tips
- A pinch of salt makes the jaggery taste sweeter, so you need less of it.
- Blend with 4 ice cubes for a frothier, colder drink.
Swaps
- Swap jaggery for 1 small ripe banana mashed in for a thicker drink with more potassium (about +40 kcal).
Storage
Drink fresh; stir again if it stands.
Nutrition is estimated per serving from IFCT 2017 and USDA FoodData Central and rounded. Your ingredients and portions will differ a little.
