How to perform

Dumbbell Pronation and Supination movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Sit with the forearm resting on a bench or thigh, wrist just past the edge, holding one end of a light dumbbell (or a dumbbell handle loaded on one side) pointing up.

  1. 1

Keep the forearm still on the support.

  2. 2

Slowly rotate the hand to turn the palm down.

  3. 3

Return through vertical and rotate to turn the palm up.

  4. 4

Continue alternating for the target reps, then switch arms.

Breathing: Breathe steadily and evenly throughout.

Coaching tips

  • Rotate from the forearm

  • Slow and controlled

  • Choke up to make it easier

Common mistakes

  • Moving the elbow or shoulder

  • Letting the weight flop to the side

  • Using too long a lever too soon

Safety notes

  • Start with a short lever and light weight; the long lever loads the wrist heavily.
